Correct Diet for Diverticulitis

The diet for a diverticulitis patient depends upon the severity of the condition. The diverticulitis attack you get can be mild, severe or a very light one. Depending on this and your previous health record, a medical practitioner will advise you on the proper diet.

In general there is a small percentage of people whose condition will move from diverticulosis to diverticulitis. Diverticulosis is the term used when you are having pouches on the wall of large intestine or the colon. On the other hand, diverticulitis is the condition in which these pouches are infected due to the entrancement of particles in the pouches.

Most of the people will have mild cases of diverticulitis which can be cured by maintaining a low fiber diet, getting plenty of rest and using antibiotics. For the severe cases which are rare you will be hospitalized. Accordingly, surgery will be performed to reduce the severity.

For mild cases of diverticulitis, the diet should be low fiber and/or liquid. Here are some options for you:

Fruit juices ( avoid prune juice) Vegetable juices Diary products as directed by your doctor Well cooked meat and eggs Vegetables like potatoes, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, eggplant etc. Fruits like banana, watermelon, grapes, peaches etc. Plain cereals

There are some foods with which you will be troubled by:

Whole grains Nuts and seeds Raisins Berries Junk food Spicy food

Your diverticulitis attack will subside slowly and your health will improve in a few days. You will now need to increase the fiber intake gradually. Don’t start in a rush. Everyday you can slowly increase the intake. You should also take in more fluids. This diet for diverticulitis will help you by reducing the pressure on the colon and it will also prevent future attacks of diverticulitis.
