Internal Hemorrhoids: Symptoms and Treatments of Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids are a common problem that afflicts half of Americans. Since you cannot see internal hemorrhoids and they rarely cause pain unless they are severe, it is important to know both the common symptoms and the treatments of internal hemorrhoids.

Rectal bleeding, itching, skin irritation, discomfort, and pain are all symptoms of internal hemorrhoids. Of these, rectal bleeding is the most common. You may see blood on the stool, in the toilet bowel, or notice streaks of bright red blood on your toilet paper.

Internal hemorrhoids secrete mucus, which causes the next two common symptoms: itching and skin irritation. Another symptom is discomfort. After having a bowel movement, you may feel as though you still need to go. This is a problem with larger hemorrhoids. Pain is another symptom of internal hemorrhoids that have become large. Most internal hemorrhoids are not painful. For severe pain, seek emergency treatment.

While you can do things to alleviate the symptoms of internal hemorrhoids, treating them requires changes in diet and lifestyle. One of the most important things you can do is to avoid constipation. Eat more fiber in the form of raw vegetables, whole grains, beans, and raw or dried fruit. Drink more water and avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol. You can soften stools with bran or psyllium, or buy stool softeners (but not laxatives) that contain these ingredients.

Regular exercise can also help treat and prevent internal hemorrhoids. Break your day up with frequent walking so you don’t spend too much time sitting or standing. Don’t lift heavy objects. If you must, exhale as you lift.
